New plumbing at NARC

We had all the plumbing redone at the rescue, not sure why we didn’t think of this before, would have saved a few winters of major hydro costs from the heaters under the modular home and headaches.  On Friday, the heater under the modular home blew, not only did it shut off it’s own breaker but also shut off the whole electrical panel…  That being said, when I got home, we had frozen pipes and no water at NARC – had to happen in this – the coldest weather ever!  I spent my evening under the modular home, heating the main water pipe so we could get water again – it worked.  I really didn’t enjoy being in a crawl space, at -30 for over 3 hours, in the dark!!  Anyways, I then decided to eliminate all the plumbing from under the house, first off it was all frozen with no way of using it again and secondly, it would eliminate all the heat trace wires, heaters and major costs we’ve been having every winter!  We temporarily installed a cold and hot trap inside near the pump to give us water for the weekend until the plumber came on Monday and installed new pipes inside and re-connected everything from scratch.  Why didn’t I think of this before?  Finally had to get mad at the system to think straight!?  Anyhoo, all works now, no longer have 30 heat trace cables plugged in and sucking up hydro and two 240 volt heaters are also disconnected and not needed – will save us some $$ this winter!  Maybe I won’t need that basement after all.. although it would make it nice and spacious if we could get a foundation in!!!  Let’s all wish for a new foundation for this coming year for NARC and make it our new years resolution in getting it done!

Vet’s tonight

So Brodie is our new Irish Wolfhound’s name, our client e-mailed with it so we are going to call him by his new name this week to get him used to it.  He did well at the vet’s, a bit of a skin rash so he is on antibiotics but otherwise fine.

Oscar did very well also, nothing to report on him from our vet’s.

Malini on the other hand, I was a bit shocked when I found out she was pregnant again, with 8 puppies in her belly but by the time they found out she was already opened so an abortion was done.  Can you believe this, she got pregnant within the first few weeks of delivering her puppies, when I picked her up from the pound she was feeding her 2-3 week old pups and pregnant with 8 more!  WOW, poor girl, no wonder it took a while for her to gain weight, was wondering why she was eating and drinking like a horse now I know why!  I guess this means I will have to get an x-ray done for Aphrodite in case this is happening with her too!  Unbelievable, just when I thought I saw it all…

Vet’s tonight and update

I brought Yeti the Irish Wolfhound, Oscar the JRT mixed spaniel and Malini the Australian Shepherd and wonderful mother of 5 puppies that have already gone to good homes to the vet’s for their surgeries.  Tomorrow morning, the boys will be neutered and lady Malini spayed, all will be given Rabies and DA2PP shots.  We requested a poop sample on Malini again as she was in really bad shape when she arrived, full of worms, fleas, etc…  As others at NARC, she is now on our deworming schedule:  Strongid-T every 14 days, Panacur 3 days monthly and Multi-Advantage each month.  But, she still has soft poop – may only be us volunteers giving her too many different things to eat (treats, canned goods, etc…) but;  better safe than sorry and the poop sample will tell us if there is something wrong.

Update at the farm!

Seems like the Yeti, or Abominable Snowman as kids are describing him has just arrived at NARC in time for Christmas!  Yep, we received a gorgeous male Irish Wolfhound and all the volunteers that have seen him so far, say he looks like Bumble, the abominable snowman from the Rudolf movie!

Aphodite is doing very well, her puppies are getting very large and healthy looking, will have to post a new photo on facebook to show you how big they are getting.  Their eyes are now opened, although they still don’t see anything but will in a few days!  They are adorable, mom is doing well, getting up now when we enter the room with her food or water and comes forward to those she knows.  She still growls at strangers or new volunteers but the moment I say “non”, she stops so being a good girl – just trying to protect her puppies!  She is now coming out with me when all the dogs are in and no one else is at the rescue, baby steps for this “wild” dog!

Needs at the rescue!

There are always needs at our rescue and this time we are out of Javex and new mops would be wonderful!  We could also use leashes, poop bags and large garbage bags.   We also always need Pedigree Vitality + or Beneful Dog Food for our babies!  We are opened every weekend, saturday and sunday from 1pm to 3pm if you wish to drop off your items.  We also have a donations drop box at the front of the property for those who want to come during the week if we aren’t there!  Or, we have wonderful volunteers who are able to come and pick up your items.  E-mail us if you wish for us to send someone to pick up donations!

Vet’s last night

I brought Malini’s 5 puppies for their first DA2PP and vet check, of course they pooped in the car on the way there so were quite stinky for our vet visit – jeez, can’t keep them clean for 1 hour Ha! Ha! Ha!  Vet said they are all healthy and strong, ready for their loving homes now!  They are eating and drinking very well, we’ve had them since October 21st – so 5 weeks at NARC and they were approximately 2 weeks when we got them so ready for adoption – YIPEE for the puppies!!!

Lucifer also came for his 3rd DA2PP and Rabies, he remains at the vet’s for his neuter today, will pick him up tonight after his surgery poor baby!

Aphrodite, yep this is our new mom of 5 new born’s name.  She is doing quite well, she is now looking at everyone that comes to say hello compared to trying to squeeze under something or hide her head in the corner.  She now also comes for her food when we put it down, will stand while we are in the room and walk towards us to come and eat.  Baby steps but she is now trusting me and our morning employee which is great – soon she will trust other people and be a normal doggy!  She does have over a month with us, her puppies are only a week or so old so she has plenty of time to come out of her shell!  Such a sweet girl and you can see from her body language that she is quite happy – even though she hasn’t wagged her tail yet – she has lots of room to walk around, take time off from her puppies if wanted, great spot for our new girl – Aprodite!
